I am thinking about buying a Helicon VoiceLive 3 Extreme unit.  I downloaded the manual and see where I can send MIDI CC messages to the unit to turn ON/OFF various effects in the unit.

I can see that I can specifically turn ON/OFF harmony.  I want to know if I can change the unit's harmony preset before turning ON and OFF that harmony.

The reason I ask this is that my band uses MIDI for our rhythm and bass section.  I would like to use a MIDI channel to select a preset, control the harmony via MIDI notes on one of the MIDI tracks, and turn ON/OFF those harmonies at selected times in each song.

    Thank you in advance.

PedroRodrigues Hi rmwestjr the MIDI implementation in VL3 is essentially the same as the VoiceLive 2…
There can be up to 500 presets loaded into a VoiceLive 3, and it’s possible to navigate between these presets with an external controller sending MIDI Control Change (“CC”) and Program Change (“PC”) messages. The VoiceLive 3 can receive CC and PC messages via MIDI from sources like keyboards, footswitches, DAWs, and more. For the controlling device to send a MIDI message to VL3 it needs to be using the same MIDI channel as the VL3, typically this is channel 1 but you’re welcome to change it. Also make sure you aren’t misusing the MIDI input filters, and ensure that the MIDI input is set to be either “USB” (for the USB-mini input) or “MIDI Ports” (for the 5-pin MIDI input) depending on how you're connecting. These settings can be changed in VL3’s “Setup” menu, on the “MIDI” tab.
      *INSERT PIC OF MIDI TAB*
To change Presets via MIDI, first tell the VL3 which Bank to look in, then tell it which Preset in that Bank you want to change to.
Bank select: To specify the desired bank, issue an LSB Bank select message (CC#32) with a value of 0-3.
Preset Select: After specifying the Bank, issue a PC Preset select message with a value of 0-127.
MSB LSB VL3Bank Program Change (PC) VL3 Preset #
      0 0 0 0-127 1-128
      0 1 1 0-127 129-256
      0 2 2 0-127 257-384
      0 3 3 0-115 385-500

The internal number associated with a Preset isn’t exactly what you see on the VL3’s screen, they’re actually all off by 1. This is because internally the list of Presets actually starts at an index of 0. This means that 0 = Preset #1, 1 = Preset #2, 2 = Preset #3, etc. It’s like your presets are saved from 0-499 but are displayed as 1-500.
There are 4 Banks in VL3, and each Bank contains 128 Presets. Therefore the Preset selection number that goes to VL3 needs to be between 1 and 128. So for a Preset above 128, you need to subtract the number of the first Preset in the same Bank to get the MIDI Program Change info.
The 9-digit message for changing to a preset is in the format of:
      MSB LSB PC#
Or, you can first send a CC#32 of the Bank you’re looking in, then a PC value of the Preset you want.
      Here are some examples:
      Preset #5 would be: 5 - 1 = 4
      000 000 004
      or CC#32 value 0, then PC 4
      Preset #100 would be: 100 - 1 = 99
      000 000 099
      or CC#32 value 0, then PC 99
      Preset #208 would be: 208 - 129 = 79 (because Preset #208 is in Bank 1, which starts at Preset #129)
      000 001 079
      or CC#32 value 1, then PC 79
      Preset 259 would be: 259 - 257 = 2
      000 002 002
      or CC#32 value 2, then PC 2
      Preset 322 would be: 322 - 257 = 65
      000 002 065
      or CC#32 value 2, then PC 65
      Preset 491 would be: 491 - 385 = 106
      000 003 106
      or CC#32 value 3, then PC 106
      Preset 500 would be: 500 - 385 = 115
      000 003 115
      or CC#32 value 3, then PC 115

When you try to address a Preset that does not exist (either an empty spot or one outside the 1-500 range), there is no built-in warning system, VL3 just won’t do anything. So if you can see the “MIDI” indication on the VL3 appearing when you send commands, but are not getting the Preset to change, ensure you’re not referencing an empty or non-existent Preset location.
*INSERT PIC OF THE MIDI POPUP*
If that all seems too complicated for you, consider using Steps instead of Presets. Steps are essentially Presets within a Preset, and you can have up to 10 Steps all in the same Preset. If your current Preset contains the Steps you’ll be using, it just takes a single CC message to choose your Step…
      CC 115 = Step
      Value represents Step Number, i.e. 1 = Step 1, 2 = Step 2, etc.
So sending a CC#115 with a value of 2 will take you to the second Step in your current Preset.

I found another post that touched on this but had no solution.  I love the sound of the adaptive EQ on my voice. The problem is, whenever I play harmonica the tone adapts to it.  When I start back singing the voice is really muddy for half of the verse.  Is there any way to lock or save the adaptive tone settings so they no longer change once you like the sound?   Another reason this would be helpfull is in Live band situations.  My vocal sounds great durring sound check but once the band kicks in I can hear the EQ and compression settings changing.

kiskadar69 I don’t think adaptive EQ could be locked. Use manual EQ mode (TC-Helicon VoiceTone Correct, VoiceTone Correct XT, VoiceLive 2, VoiceLive Rack, VoiceLive 3).

    Hi,

I am able to record the dry vocal and separate midi piano tracks on Protools via USB however is there a way to record the harmonized vocal track by itself. One other question, I have a prerecorded vocal and I wish to add a harmony track to it , is it possible to do so?

Any assistance would be greatly appreciated.

    • Wineoh52
PedroRodrigues Hi Wineoh52 regarding your question about how to add a harmony track to a pre-recorded vocal, I would suggest that probably the best option may be by interfacing the Perform VK with a DAW via USB, please see below:
There are 4 inputs and 8 output channels for USB audio in PERFORM-VK.
A driver is required for both USB audio AND MIDI use.
      It can be found at
      https://www.tc-helicon.com/tchelicon/product?modelCode=P0DEE

      USB IN
      CH 1 Backing Track L
      CH 2 Backing Track R
      CH 3 Dry vocal in
      CH 4 NaturalPlay IN
If no signal is transmitted to the product on USB audio channel 3, the product will use analogue in for the voice input.
So, you could use channels 1&2 to input stereo tracks from your DAW but sing into the product via your mic.
Please note that channel 1&2 input is NOT passed to the USB outputs, but IS passed to the Main analogue outs.
If you use a computer for backing tracks, they will get sent analogue to the PA. Volume control for those tracks happens at the computer.
NaturalPlay IN is not connected to the audio output. It is used only for NaturalPlay chord input. This is intended to allow you to use a “guide track” for NatualPlay that you may not want heard in the mix. It could be dry guitar chords or piano chords, with different voicings or placement in order to create your desired harmony output.

      USB OUT
CH 1 L processed vocal, Keyboard/ Aux in (same as what is on main outputs, less the audio received on USB in
CH 2 R processed vocal, Keyboard/ Aux in (same as what is on main outputs, less the audio received on USB in 2
      CH 3 Dry Voice input
      CH 4 Not used
      CH 5 Dry INST IN R / Aux L
      CH 6 Dry INST IN R / Aux R
      CH 7 Harmony Voices L
      CH 8 Harmony Voices R

Regarding your question about the separate midi piano tracks please consider that the
PERFORM-VK responds to Control Change (CC), Program Change (PC) and MIDI Tempo (not MIDI Clock) information.
To block incoming CC and PC messages, hold the Set button while powering on.
Please note that data will still be accepted in this state.
For convenience, we have mapped many PERFORM-VK CC’s to the Behringer UMA25s controller keyboard.
The “UMA25s Mapping” column shows the button or control on the UMA25s related to each control.

      MIDI PC Messages
      The product’s 3 presets correspond to Program Change Bank 0: 125, 126, 127

      MIDI CC List
The following chart shows a list of all available control changes.
The MIDI channel can be set by holding the Set button and pressing a note on a connected MIDI keyboard.
The MIDI channel on which this note was sent will be used as the MIDI receive channel.

Was wondering if there's an easy way of searching for (or modifying from another) vocal effects by song name (when it's not found in the app, that is). In specific, the highly synthesized part at the beginning of Earth Wind & Fire's Let's Groove "We can boogie down, down upon down, the boogie down, down upon..." and also Kid Rock's hardtune on Only God Knows Why.

PedroRodrigues Hi DanStelluto please consider that the only beaming process available for this unit is the one stated below Your Perform-V also has the ability to “beam” or import a Preset sound to each of the 1, 2, 3 buttons.
The imported Preset can contain up to seven effects:
      Harmony
      HardTune (pitch correction)
      Megaphone
      Modulation (chorus, flange etc.)
      Reverb
      Double
      Echo
There are two ways you can import a Preset.

First using the Preset app First, you can use your smartphone and our Preset app to “beam” a Preset into Perform-V.
Simply press the button for the Preset location
(1, 2 or 3) that you’d like to assign the Preset to.
Then, follow the instructions in the app to
send the Preset data to your Perform-V.
Download the Perform-V Preset app here:
      Play Store: https://play.google.com/store/search?q=perform%20v%20app&c=apps&gl=GB
      Apple Store : https://apps.apple.com/

      Second is by using VoiceSupport
Second, you can use our VoiceSupport application (available for Microsoft Windows and Apple OS X).
      Install VoiceSupport on your computer.
Connect your computer via USB to your
      Perform-V.
You can now add Presets by drag & drop from
      our available online libraries.
      Download VoiceSupport here:

PetGerbil Can you try a different stick. ? Some sticks just don't work, no-matter what you do. I've got one that doesn't work, I tried all the tips and suggestions to get it to work but no-go. Everything else can read and write to it. But the VL3 just says "Nope!" (well, more precisely.. "What stick ?"...perhaps it thinks it's Nelson,..."I see no sticks!" :D )
      • Mar 6
    • JdL500900
PedroRodrigues Hi,JdL500900 please consider that the USB flash drive needs to be formatted using the FAT32 file system. NTFS, HFS+ (the OS X file system) or other file systems cannot be read by VL3X.
Instructions for formatting a USB flash drive with FAT32 can be found here:

      wikihow.com/Format-FAT32

Your VL3X can only import MP3 or WAV audio files. (16 bit 48KHZ)
Insert the USB flash stick into your computer and drag/drop your Backing Tracks onto the drive. You can also use a file manager application.
Make sure to copy all audio files to the root directory of the flash drive. That means you should not put audio files into folders or subfolders. Your VL3X will not find these files.
Insert the USB flash drive stick into the USB Host Port on VL3X.
Your VL3X will recognize all valid audio files in the root directory of the flash drive and make them available for import.
      Press the Store button once.
Use the arrow buttons below the Control Knob to navigate to the TRACK IMPORT tab.

    Greetings!

I have a question about routing of the AUX in on the VoiceLive 3: the AUX input is mixed to the vocal channel output, and I have hooked up a few synths to a mixer and run them thru the AUX in and... they come out my vocal channel on the mixing board :-/.

Of course it would be *way more convenient to NOT have them going into my vocal channel on the board: Is there anyway to route the AUX in to something other* than the vocal out? I’m hoping for either the phones out (and turn everything else OFF in that channel *and turn the AUX out *off in the vocal out) or route it thru the monitor out...

    Any suggestions appreciated!

PedroRodrigues Hi TimRideout, you are correct, the only option will be to set the levels of Aux signals to Off if you wish to remove the signal from the XLR outputs and only use them over your headphones or IEMs.

I upgraded to voice live rack from a voiceworks rack unit.  I control all of my devices with MIDI .

On the voiceworks, I was able to use MIDI continuous controller messages to select whether the harmonies would be controlled by scale or by MIDI input.

On the Voice Live, this appears to be a choice made in the global setup, and I see no MIDI CC command for changing this. I do see a CC for selecting what scale to use if the harmony option is already set to scale, but I have a number of songs that rely on MIDI input for the lead or harmony, and I can't stop between songs to change a global paramerter.  Surely there is a Continuous controller dedicated to this task??

Please let me know what my options are... I'm hoping I am overlooking something obvious. The inability to change between MIDI chords and predefined scales as a means of controlling harmonies  on a song by song basis, without having to manually edit global settings would be a deal killer for me.

    • PATMARR53
PedroRodrigues Hi PATMARR53 Please consider that when it comes to MIDI-controlled Harmony and Hardtune you can sample the many presets that feature the Harmony and Hardtune effects.
Load a preset with one or both of these effect buttons lit.
Now you can play a song on your keyboard while singing and hear how the effects adjust musically as you play the different chords in your song.
As each chord is recognized, the LCD display will briefly show “NP” meaning NaturalPlay.
The factory presets that have the word “Notes” in their names (presets #217-238) operate differently for both Harmony and Hardtune.
These presets allow you to determine the pitch of the Harmony or Hardtune effects to the exact notes you play.
The harmony notes will adapt to the octave of your playing where the Hardtune effect ignores it.
The maximum number of harmony notes that will sound can be 4 or 8 depending on which preset you load.
This in turn is due to whether Harmony Doubling is activated in the HARMONY tab of the EDIT menu.
In chords without a clear third, VoiceLive Rack will assume a major chord, so when you play in a minor key, and as a general rule, you should always include a third when changing chords.
If you want to sing right at the beginning of your song, it’s important to play a chord just before you sing If you sing while playing a chord and then press the sustain pedal, you’re able to add a keyboard embellishment that doesn’t affect the harmony.
Your mod wheel can be used to add or remove vibrato in harmony presets.
To set key from the front panel, both harmony and Hardtune use the same key and this is set in the HARMONY edit tab.
      1. Load a preset with Harmony active. A good one to start with is #3 CLOSE UP 3RD.
      2. Hold the Harmony button.
      3. Set the KEY and SCALE parameters on the top line* to the key of your song.
If these parameters are not visible, the NaturalPlay algorithm in VoiceLive Rack has recognized input from either the AUX IN, GUITAR IN or MIDI inputs and has configured itself to derive guidance from that input. In this case you can:
      a) Cycle the power off and on and ensure no connections are made to the inputs noted above.
      b) Set the GLOBAL NATURALPLAY parameter in the SYSTEM tab of the Setup menu to SCALE. This will disable the auto input sensing feature of NaturalPlay.
      I hope this helps
      Thank you

I'm wondering if anyone can give me any feedback on how the vocal harmonizer might work if running through a bass? Am concerned the quick changing notes and absence of playing a full chord would make the pedal struggle to work out the key that I'm playing in.

P.S I'm finding it really frustratting at the lack of direct contact with TC. Hope to hear from a representative about your product.

WilliamR Hello, William from musictribe here. You could play bass, the workaround you could do is to create a preset and manually program in the key and save it to the preset. This way the voice live won't have to search for the note or guess what key you are in due to the lack of guitar chords being present. Feel free to check out the 7-minute mark of this youtube video to see how to do this.

PetGerbil There's an idea for your Dev team, make a pedal that squirts out a Midi chord from four programmable footswitches. So you could have switch one as say, Em. Switch 2 Dm(The saddest of all keys) etc.
Big display as well. Bit like a reverse polyphonic tuner.
