I am sending MIDI messages from my Yamaha MOTIF XF8 Workstation Keyboard to a TC Helicon VoiceLive Rack via MIDI during live performances. I am editing my MIDI sequences in Cubase and downloading them to the MOTIF for for each song. When I start the MOTIF's sequencer to begin playing a song,  MIDI messages, ie: i.e.: CC 0 (BankSelect MSB), CC 32 (BankSelect LSB) and CC 115 (Control 115) are sent to the VoiceLive Rack to select the correct Preset for that song.  What I am finding is that in about 1 in 10 songs, the VoiceLive will select the wrong Preset, which can result in difficulty and embarrassment for the singer. Originally I put the MIDI messages for the VoiceLive at the first beat of the first bar of each sequence, but then I started encountering this problem. So, I've been putting the MIDI messages on the second beat of the first bar with no other MIDI events in that bar to see if that would fix it, however the problem still persists. Has anyone got any suggestions as to how I can ensure that the VoiceLive selects the right patch 100% of the time, instead of 90% of the time? I can email a example midi file which contains a typical guide track for the Voicelive as they appear in the MIDI sequences to somebody if that helps.

      Hey @synthmax,
That sounds very bizzare indeed, I haven't heard of this before.  If you could please share the offending MIDI file by uploading it to a Cloud platform (like Dropbox or Google Drive) I'd be happy to try it out with a VoiceLive Rack here and see if it triggers the wrong preset at times.

      Hello there TCH Spencer,

Thanks for getting back to me. Please find above the Dropbox link for the sample file. The problem is very random. You can send this file to the Voicelive thirty times and it will randomly select the incorrect patch once. My lead vocalist thinks it's end of the world. :\  Looking forward to hearing back about this. Many thanks.

      Hi again @synthmax,
Thanks for sharing your MIDI file!  I was able to import that into Reaper and send it to a VoiceLive Rack via 5-pin MIDI out of my interface.  This is an article I wrote a while ago about changes presets via MIDI on VoiceLive 3, and the same info applies to the VoiceLive Rack, so this is what I'm basing my preset-changing knowledge on.  I inspected your file and it all looks correct to me, sending CC 32 to select your bank, a Program Change to specify a preset, and CC 115 to specify the Step of that preset.  I automated your provided MIDI commands a few dozen times and it always selected preset 259 without fail for me... So I still want to refrain from taking the easy way out and blaming the Motif but I will say I wasn't able to recreate your issue with that file here in my setup.  Is it possible for you to further debug the Motif though by plugging its MIDI output into an interface and monitoring its messages on a computer?  If you use an app like MIDI-OX you can monitor your keyboard's output and know for sure that it's consistently sending the same messages every time.

I also forgot to ask which firmware build your VoiceLive Rack is running?  When you boot it up the splash screen will show you "Build __". I'm currently on build 26 which is the latest firmware.

      Hello there TCH-Spencer,

Thanks for getting back to me about this issue. Yeah, I thought my MIDI files are o.k. too.

Unfortunately there is no build of MIDI-OX for MacOS available. I tried to monitor the MIDI output from the MOTIF on my Mac using MidiPipe, but I wasn’t able to see any messages coming through. This could be something to do with the software configuration of my Mac or the Steinberg UR22mkII that I had the MIDI out plugged into. Either way, I don’t want to spend any more time on that as I am confident that the MOTIF is transmitting the MIDI messages o.k.

I can confirm my Voicelive is running Build Version 1.0.09 Build 26.

Could the problem be that the software or firmware on the VoiceLive is corrupt? Is there a way of reinstalling the firmware? Should I try a Global Reset?

The other thing that I thought might be worth a try is using a brand new MIDI cable between the MOTIF and the VoiceLive. I will give that a shot.

I would appreciate any further thoughts you might have on this matter and my ideas on how to fix this issue.

      Best,
      Grant

    Hey there,

I bought the Perform-VE and wanted to install it on my computer.
Unfortunately there are no drivers available ?!
I followed the link to download the driver https://www.tc-helicon.com/de/products/perform-ve/support, but there is only a 404 page ...

Can someone help me find the right PC drivers for the Perform-VE?

    Thank you in advance

I have this pedal for about 3 months. Everything was running right until monday. Normally when I put on the pedal the green light on the top right is lighting once and comes off and I can play with the pedal. Now when I'm pluggin in the pedal, the green light on top right stay on, and the middle light comes flashing red. Then I push the button of the voice function the middle light is red steady and the top right stay green. I push again and it comes red flash and the top right green. I push again the middle light is red steady and the top right stay green. Then I push again and it comes red flash and the top right red. I try to maybe undo something by keeping my foot on the button to see if something will get out of it and nothing works. I can hear the click of a connection to my console when I put on the pedal, so it makes me think that a contact is made but no sound with the mic. I have test the MIC and the console alone and I have sound. Also the pedal do not connect anymore with the computer. The software shows the pedal but no connection. I have a ticket request but I don't know where to do a follow up on this. Case: 00992754 - - [ref:_00D2818RET._5000I1ihQwA:ref]

Is someone knows about this kind of strange problem?

    Thanks

Chuck the device and find a different f/x processor from a different company.

It appears there is no fix for this and Music Tribe has scrubbed all the old forum posts about it.

From my experience with my VoiceTouch 2, this blue/white screen issue is a random occurance. For me, it self-resolved, and now it's happened again and I can't fix it.

A very lucky guess is that it looks like a contrast misadjustment... If the unit is out of warranty and if it was very impractical to have it serviced by a certified TC Helicon tech.. Before using the unit as a paper weight, I'd open the unit and try to locate a small potentiometer very close to the display.. I'd turn it a very slight bit, power up carefully and see if anything improves at all...

      Good luck.

PS: I am a tech myself but in no way connected to TC Helicon other than owning a unit myself. No issues so far.

      Hi Tom,

I have been gigging with VL3x for about 3 years now and this has happened to me twice. It's probably that the SD card become unseated. Fortunatly during rehersal or sound check. So the show went on.

If you unit is out of warrenty and you are somewhat of a handy person there are many video's online that can show you how to fix it.

      video link of many.  blob:https://www.youtube.com/71fe5c17-c850-4251-a5ed-1e2b70a3d62a

I have done it twice. I love my unit but this seems to be a common problem that TC Helicon should be addressing when if they ever update the unit. I hope they do because I'd love them to add midi mix control and more I.O. options. Non the less it has been working great for me so far.

      Good luck.

When plugging in my headphones to my GO XLR Mini, i hear a constant static/buzzing noise coming through. I know it's not my headphones because they work just fine with other devices. It's not my microphone because I can still hear it even when I unplug the mic. I've tried moving it's position, moving the other electronics away from it, but nothing is working. I've also tried plugging the device into different USB ports on my computer. The static/buzzing seems to go away whenever I put my hands on the microphone or the GO XLR Mini itself for some reason. Please get back to me when you can.

Mazards Sounds like you might need a Ground Loop Isolater. They are like $12 on amazon and you should plug that in either the headset or microphone line in/out to cancel it out. If I am thinking of what you are talking about.

Hi, TC has so many different units incorporating vocal effects that it's hard to know which is best for singer/acoustic guitar. I can't afford $800 for the Voicelive 3 so I back ordered the Play Acoustic at Sweetwater. Meanwhile I see all your videos for that unit are very old (like 7 years) so I'm wondering if the Play Acoustic is old technology by now?  I was attracted by the "Acoustic" in the name but now I'm wondering if I'm going to get stuck, and maybe I should switch my order to a more modern unit before it's too late? Can you make a recommendation and give some insight as to which units are the most up to date? Thanks!

      • Is Play Acoustic still supported or obsolete?
snotice You still didn’t fully answer the question, so i’ll rephrase: Is the Voicelive Play Acoustic (black) still being manufactured? If not, is the Voicelive Play (the blue one with the same form factor) the direct replacement, and does it contain all the same abilities (software) as the Voicelive Play Acoustic? Or, is there some other model voice unit that has replaced both of them - other than the Voicelive 3 which I can’t afford for $800? Even if unsold units of the Play Acoustic are still available I don’t want to buy one if the model is formally discontinued. I only want models that are under current production and are still being fully supported and regularly updated with new software. Please help me make my purchase by giving me straight and complete information. Thank you.

HaloRecordings snotice. I understand your question and I'm in the same boat. The Play Acoustic (PA) has been out for several years. Too many. I would think there's a new model in the $300 range on the horizon. The VoiceLive 3 is not only out of my price range too, it's way too complicated for my needs. I use the original Harmony G pedal and have been using it since it came out about 10 years ago. I run the Guitar THRU into my pedalboard and I love the pedal. But I want to upgrade to something that has a more accurate harmonies along with guitar effects. The PA comes close to what I'm looking for but it is old and it doesn't have the I/O's I would expect in a pedal at this price point. And a little note to answer your question about the PA being in production. The answer TC gave you was a link to a a list of all "in production" vocal pedals. The PA is not listed. So I would think they are no longer being produced. This may be why I've seen them at lower prices. Get rid of the old stock before the new and improved model comes out. I'm sticking with my Harmony G. If TC does release a new model I hope it has the following: Guitar IN and THRU (to run a guitar to a pedalboard and Amp}. A separate Guitar XLR/1/4 Inch Combo Stereo OUT with the onboard effects. XLR Combo Stereo Vocals Out, MIDI in and USB C. Similar to the Boss VE-8 and VoiceLive 3. Good Luck.

Does the voicelive play have enough gain for an SM7B mic?  Does it have an onboard preamp?

    0 400
    • Frank00
      DavidKnighton Hello Frank,
Yes, the Voicelive Play has a built-in preamp with a dedicated control knob. The user manual specifies to use the DYNAMIC MIC setting for dynamic mics like SM58 or OM5. This tells me the device is more or less tailored for use with the more common dynamic vocal mics, but since every person has a different vocal range, the preamp should allow quite a wide range of SPL. Looking at the SHURE SM guide, you can see the SM7B has a much lower output level than SM58 by comparison, so you'll end up using much more gain level on the preamp. How much gain level really depends on the person standing in front of the mic, so it's difficult to give a clear answer. If you're a strong winded vocalist, I would say go for it, but if you're soft spoken, then you may want to do a little more research. Here's a link to the SHURE SM guide for your viewing pleasure.

      • TC helicon voicelive play as a preamp?
Frank00 I can confirm you do not need an additional pre-amp if you have the Voicelive Play and an SM7B. I just tried it. With the Soyuz Launcher and my voice through the SM7B, I turn the input gain to 11-12 o'clock on my Focusrite 2i2 with phantom power on to get a consistent green signal. Using the Voicelive Play and the SM7B, I turn the input gain to the 2 o'clock position (no phantom power required) for a consistent green signal.

Hi there. Is it possible to get a distorted sound by playing an harmonica trough the voicelive3 ? For me it looks like the frequencies of the harmonica don`t work with the effects of the voicelive. Maybe there is a way to fix this - would be a nice feature. Thanks, and musically regards from austria. datoni

      Hey @ToniGruber,
I do know that our gear usually doesn't respond well to whistling input, playing a harmonica will likely also yield an undesirable result.  Additionally, all our gear is made to expect a monophonic singing voice, with the harmonica being a polyphonic instrument that can really confuse our effects as well.  If you're looking to apply effects to a harmonica, you're probably better off using guitar pedals (which are inherently built to expect a polyphonic input).  Cheers!

      Hi

Try it trough the guitar layer and use the amp effects.
It works well, but you have to get a good signal, f.ex. with one of the Shure 520DX microphones (or vintage model).

If you don't use VL3 for voice, it's to expensive only for harmonica. Then you better buy a real good harmonica-amp and maybe some stomp pedals. As I play the VL3 with saxophone on stage, sometimes I use it for harmonica, but normally I play the harmonica over a good little amp to create the real distortion "the natural way".

I'm not looking for a "bluesy" distorted sound with harmonica or  wooden flute using the Live Play, but rather the ability to create an assortment of effects that can give a different variety of voices or colors to these instruments...not for playing blues at all. I've been using a TC mic mechanic for a few years that performs OK with these instruments on stage in our group, but would like more sound options. I understand the Live Play is made for voice, but do you think it can add effects to these wind instruments without a bunch of additional feedback or noise?  Don't really need the pitch or adaptive features. Thanks - Tod

      BigDogDaddyD

      Hello ToniGruber,

I fell ya.  I've been in the same boat for years.  The problem I've experienced is that guitar pickups are not as powerful as a microphone.  So using a harmonica and microphone into a guitar pedal often causes violent feedback and loud distorted sounds.  Same with using the guitar 'IN port' on a vocalizer.  I play classic rock, country, bluegrass & folk, blues, and cajun. And sometimes I even play classical.  So I need different sounds and effects for playing diatonic, chromatic, tremelo, or octave.  I also play the keyboard or guitar with my harmonica.  I can't speak for the VoiceLive 3 (the VoiceLive 3 Extreme is on my list when I decide to upgrade), but I have used a VoiceLive Touch 2 for quite awhile now.  And I have to tell you that I get some really impressive effects with a Shure 57 microphone and all my different harps.  I use separate effects pedals between the VoiceLive Touch 2 and the amp or PA if I need something The VoiceLive Touch can't give me.  But I love the reverb, chorus options, octave shifts, etc...  Some of the vocal effects cause the harmonica to sound more like a synthesizer on acid, so not all are good.  But I simply sat down and walked through all the different options one-by-one.  This took several days to do. And it was different with different types and keys of harmonicas.  And when you add all the different guitar effects on top of the harmonica,  I really get some great sounds.  And the looper really makes a difference as well.  I'm hoping one day the major guitar stores will have more demo units set up to experiment with.  I'm really surprised Music Tribe and TC-Helicon don't have demos with harmonica players.  The great Brendan Power uses his harmonicas, VoiceLive Touch, and a separate effects box, on his stage performances.  Part of his act is showing folks how to loop.  Google "Brendan Power looping", or do aYoutube lookup.  He has quite a few videos using his harps with TC Helicon equipment.  Hope this helps.  Take care and good luck with your journey.
