I am looking for information on what each parameter means under the Harmony and Double voice choices  ??? For example < Gender , has quite a few choices but no explanation of what each one is suposed to do  ?  Porta ds? Smooth ?  Etc. There are many pages under Harmony as you scroll down and no where do I find explanations of each item I scroll down to > Yes some are self explanitory but quite a few I have no idea what they mean. On The Highs and Lows and Mid range areas it lists certain frequnceys but I I do not know where is a area I should be dialing in for , plus use on an outboard PA these adjustments to EQ mess them up too... . So confusing . Nothing in its booklet or downloads go over any of these parameters.... HELP ????  I tried using the presets given or downloaded but they need fine tuning for my voice. the more I play around and adjust the worse it gets... Does any one know the meaning of these parameters...  Last question is the double part used just to dowble your voice and not create a 2nd harmony for a Duo type song,  for Ex. Think Everly Brothers.

      Hi @BigangboBonanno!

I'm going to do my best to list all of the paramaters under Harmony and Doubling and give a brief explanation of what each does. If you have any further questions feel free to ask! I've also attached an eq cheat sheet which might help you to figure out which frequencies you may want to cut or boost. Try using the Voicelive's looper to record your harmonies, and listen to what you want to change about them. Then find that issue on the cheat sheet to determine which frequencies you need to cut or boost. Before changing the eq settings, I would make sure that in the "tone" tab of your Voicelive's setup menu you have the tone parameter set to on, and the shape, compress, and de-ess knobs are set to around 50. This will add adaptive eq and compression to your voice, and you may find that you don't need to add other eq in the harmony menu!

      - Lead level: volume of your lead vocal

      - Level: volume of harmony effect

      - Human Style: determines how the humanize parameter behaves.

      - Humanize: varies the dynamics and pitch of the harmonies to sound more human. Depending on which humanize style you select and what percentage you dial in, this can create anything from subtle variation to an extreme effect.

      - Vib Style: Determines the way that vibrato behaves, e.g. the attack/decay of the effect, the shape of the vibrato, the speed of the vibrato, etc.

      - Vibrato: Determines the depth of the pitch and amplitude modulation created by vibrato

      - Pan: Determines the stereo spread of the harmonies

      - Gender: shifts the formant and register of harmonies without effecting pitch. This control is bipolar; turning the knob left will make your voice sound more "male" and turning it right will make it sound more female. You get seperate control of the gender of each harmony and doubling voice, which is why you see "V1 Gender, V2 Gender, etc."

      - Porta (portatempo in double): Effects the amount that harmony notes "glide" between one another. With no porta notes will shift immediately, with porta there will be a glissando between notes. You get seperate control of portatempo on each harmony and doubling voice, which is why you see "V1 Porta, V2 Porta, etc."

      - Smooth: Smoothing effects the amount of pitch correction applied to the harmonies. When smoothing is at 100%, harmonies won't be pitch corrected at all, and notes will smoothly transition between one another as they are sung. When at 0%, the harmony notes will be fully pitch corrected and sound autotuned. The downside of 100% smoothing that if a singer is at all pitchy, the harmony notes will be pitchy as well. We've found that the most natural sounding smoothing settings for most singers is between 90-95%. Each voice has individual smoothing control, which is why you see ""V1 Smooth," "V2 Smooth," etc.

      Hope this helps!

@BigangboBonanno , to make simple doubling effects without creating new harmonies, try the "1 voice tight" setting in the "double" tab!

I thought I replied to you when I got this . But apparently it did not accept my reply. I Thank You so much.. I have been using your advice and yes it is getting better.  I have tone off due to when on it gets too distorted when I sing louder even though Green Light on unit stays well below the red , hardly goes into yellow in fact.  and the tone setting on the highs make me sound just too bright and squeaky and a bit of distortion comes in. This is regarless of using Adaptive or not. Yes I tried messing with EQs and I have to almost turn off the highs and bring up lows and mids to get close but still the squeaky ness I cannot get out. Turn tone off and all is better. Yes Tried different Mics. SM 58 , 57 the TC helicon mics and an Audio Technica SM58 Beta type. The shure SM 58 and 57 sound the best to me . I am a tenor but I can go somewhat lower range and can hit some very decent high notes too... I have not messed with the Gender for the ones set on the Harmony I chose are pretty good for me at the moment.  Yes using Natural Play for the guitar chord and my vocal , the pitch on harmony takes a second to catch up for some reason at some very hard times. I  only chose Natural Play for the first vocal and leave the rest alone with nothing on except unison or maybe an octave above.  If I put Natural play on rest of harmonies things go pretty bad.. Yes I tried to dial in the paratmeters , I took off auto tune in main menu , I sing on key prettly well , and left the smooth parameter setting at your suggestions and tried with close adustments there to dial in further but to no avail. Did not mess with Porta , VIb is off, Humanize I try on and off but does not help my issue.   I wiil keep trying. The song I am working on is called Let It Be Me by the Everly Brothers. I have it very very close.... thank you again.   Angelo

      Hi Angelo (@BigangboBonanno),

Let me know how it goes! I'm glad I could be of help.

Do use the auto mic gain settings on your voicelive? This might help you reduce the distortion you were speaking of. All you have to do is hold the setup button and sing into your mic at performance volume, then press the reverb button. This will set your gain to a level that doesn't clip.

      All the best,

      Rob

Hi I'm a guitar player and recently purchased a TC Helicon Talkbox Synth about 2 months back, I have a classic Tube talkbox but wanted to get away from tube/microphone set up, after extensive research I like the Talkbox synth simplicity and pedal format - but in practice it is not a simple effect to use the way it is currently configured.

My main concern with this product versus the regular talkbox is the ability to sustain notes when not vocalizing or talking into the mic.

My band plays Sweet Emotion by Aerosmith and the talkbox effect sound is good, but I cannot talk into the Microphone to trigger the talkbox synth for 40 seconds without taking a breath - is there a way to add a note sustain feature for a second or 2 seconds?

When using a regular talk box you have the Tube in your month and can play guitar and breath as needed and it will produce the talkbox sound, with the Talkbox synth if you are not talking into the mic or breathing the sound cuts out - not ideal and it's very abrupt.

Good suggestion. I totally get where you're coming from and a hold feature would be useful for those long notes. I'll put a note in regarding it as we go forward with new products and implementations.

Before I try it I thought i\I'd ask if it can be used with an electric bass. Thanks. GREAT product

      Hi @ChuckZah,

The play acoustic's guitar effects and amp modeling work fine for electric bass guitar, and you can get some really great tones with it. That said, the naturalplay vocal harmony engine likely won't work with a bass because it relies on tracking chords to accurately create harmonies, so if you're planning to use naturalplay with electric bass it won't work well.

I've been searching around and can't seem to find any definitive answers on this. Can you double the speed of your loop on the voicelive 3 or the voicelive 3 extreme? I use to use the Line 6 M9 stompbox for my looping and there was a halftime setting on it where you'd record your loop at half time then return it to normal speed doubling the tempo of the loop. Is this available on the voicelive 3s? Also, what about reverse? And is it possible to sync either pedal with any other loopers?

What are the differences between the voicelive 3 and the voicelive 3 extreme?

If these questions don't describe these pedals do you have any recommendations for me to look into?

    THANKS!

The Voicelive 3/Voicelive 3 extreme's loopers can both be synced via midi, but neither has time shifting or reverse capability. The Voicelive 3 extreme can do effect automation and backing tracks, and it also has more loop memory than the regular Voicelive 3. Other than that, the VL3 and VL3x have identical effects engines and interfaces.

      Hope this helps!

Hello eveyone, i just noticed a funny (yet frustrating) fact. I massively use loops in my sets, and I both use the looper integrated in the play Acoustic and another looper, the boss rc 30. Now, I noticed today that the play Acoustic looper kinda ruins the guitar sound, it's like it's filtered and is obviously different from the one i hear when i play, also it's completely different from the sound i get on the rc30, which is identical to the sound i hear. How is this possible? It's funny cause I didn't notice that before, but i need to understand it cause i need them both in my live sets. Thanks to anyone who is willing to help!

The first thing I'd check is whether you have the speaker sim enabled on page 3 of the setup menu. This is designed to make your guitar sound like it's coming out of an electric guitar cab, which will colour your sound. Also double check that guitar amp fx are set to off. If neither of these solves the issue, it could be an issue with your setup. What does your signal flow look like? What order are your effects pedals in currently?

      Hope this helps!

I bougth this unit a year ago, and now when I am IMG_20190628_150208.jpgswitching on, it turns off and on again, then shows the window message as on the pic.

Chuck the device and find a different f/x processor from a different company.

It appears there is no fix for this and Music Tribe has scrubbed all the old forum posts about it.

From my experience with my VoiceTouch 2, this blue/white screen issue is a random occurance. For me, it self-resolved, and now it's happened again and I can't fix it.

A very lucky guess is that it looks like a contrast misadjustment... If the unit is out of warranty and if it was very impractical to have it serviced by a certified TC Helicon tech.. Before using the unit as a paper weight, I'd open the unit and try to locate a small potentiometer very close to the display.. I'd turn it a very slight bit, power up carefully and see if anything improves at all...

      Good luck.

PS: I am a tech myself but in no way connected to TC Helicon other than owning a unit myself. No issues so far.

      Hi Tom,

I have been gigging with VL3x for about 3 years now and this has happened to me twice. It's probably that the SD card become unseated. Fortunatly during rehersal or sound check. So the show went on.

If you unit is out of warrenty and you are somewhat of a handy person there are many video's online that can show you how to fix it.

      video link of many.  blob:https://www.youtube.com/71fe5c17-c850-4251-a5ed-1e2b70a3d62a

I have done it twice. I love my unit but this seems to be a common problem that TC Helicon should be addressing when if they ever update the unit. I hope they do because I'd love them to add midi mix control and more I.O. options. Non the less it has been working great for me so far.

      Good luck.

    Hi,

when I power in my vl3x, the input meters show maxed out to the red even though nothing is plugged in. I tried plugging in a mic and a guitar- no change. Rebooted to factory settings- no change.

unit has been kept in pristine studio condition, and is completely unusable at the moment. Any help would be appreciated!

Hi, I have a need to enter bypass mode using Midi.  I use midi for many functions on the VL2, all using PC messages.  The manual indicates bypass can be enabled using CC#114.  I have tried multiple controllers, I know the unit is receiving the message (PC messages work fine and I can visually see the Midi indicator on the VL2 when I send the CC#114 message), so I am at a loss as to why it is not entering bypass mode.  I have tinkered with the CC Channel in setup (I am unsure exactly what that is and why it is different form the Midi Channel).

Any idea why the 114 CC message is not turning on bypass mode?

    Thanks in advance!

      Hey @ToddPlesko,
You've found a bug!  Well kind of... The good news is that CC 114 actually is working and is toggling the Bypass mode as it should, the bad news is that the footswitch LED isn't being toggled with the Bypass mode.  So you're right that the footswitch isn't lighting up or turning off with this CC, but if you listen to the VL2's output it actually is toggling Bypass.  Cheers!

So if a teenager wanted to start beatboxing and looping in a live situation like for a school dance or gathering of friends. what TCH product(s) should I recommend? I've already told him about your amazing iPhone apps, but those are little hard to master in a live situation, I think. What else do you have?

Hi you have a couple of options! If you're looking for something really simple, then the Ditto Mic Looper is for you. If you're up for something that will give you a vocal effect or a kick or a snare built in, then go for Perform VE. I hope this helps!

I don't understand why this is not an easy answer to find.  I just hit "Backup All" in VoiceSupport2 which is hooked up to my VL3x... Where does the backup file go????

    • JohnShelley

      Hey @JohnShelley,
In VoiceSupport 2 you'll find created backups in the "Presets" tab under "Backups" on the left.backups.png

You can also use the "Import" and "Export" buttons in the top-right to manage backups.

These backups also exist as pairs of files on your computer.  On a Windows machine they live in "C:\Users\[Username]\AppData\Roaming\TC-Helicon\VoiceSupport 2\VoiceLive Play GTX\data" and each backup is a pair of files - a ".tch" file and a ".xml" file together create a backup.  The files are pretty useless outside of VoiceSupport 2, but nevertheless that's where they are.  Cheers!
