XR18 Internet with no Cellular Service

I am interested in the XR18 and just had a question about using the device in a place that has no cellular service (or internet). We have a camp that we do live music at once a year and wanted to make sure that the xr18 wifi would still work in this situation.

Any information will help. Thanks!

Re: XR18 Internet with no Cellular Service

You will be better off without any of those extra 'wireless' signals about. The WiFi built in to the XR series is a fairly old chip and isn't very good in a congested WiFi space. However it may cause problems if all campers have smartphones with them looking for unavailable internet access though. It is always better to use a more modern external WiFi router with external aerial for better coverage and less likelyhood for interferences from smartphones.

Re: XR18 Internet with no Cellular Service

You don’t need internet or or cell service to creat a closed WiFi network for the XAir but if people have smartphones the phones will try and connect to that network if they detect any WiFi signal so this may creat an issue for you! You might want to get a dual band external WiFi router and setup the closed network from there, the issue with the builtin WiFi in the XAir is that the max number of devices that can connect to it is 4! So if 4 or more devices are attempting to connect even though you have the network encrypted, those devices can make an unencrypted inquiry to see if there is an open WiFi or internet connection now if 4 or more phones try to make and inquiry at the same time your device could be locked out and you lose connection then 4 more phones jump on then it’s a fight to get you back in! With an external WiFi routers most will allow 10 or more simultaneous connections or inquiries so the chances of you getting bumped off are fare greater! Another option with having an external router is that most come with a built in 5 port switch this would allow you to run at least one wired over Ethernet cable a laptop for and emergency just in case you do lose WiFi you have a wired backup.
