Essential Firewire Information for PC Users!

http://www.rme-audio.com/english/techinfo/fw800sp2.htm

I found the part where TI chipsets are mentioned and certain cards are commented on. It seems that even a TI chipset can have the wrong voltages and clock crystals and thus ruin a decent FW card.

There are also recommendations as to brands that are quality adopters of the OHCI standard.

Love this quote

"Microsoft's proceeding is thus at least controversial. In any case, it's a prime example of a somewhat unworldly bureaucratic-mindedness."

Re: Essential Firewire Information for PC Users!

It is certainly strange that even with SP3, the issue is still ongoing. The MS patch in that article does not work with with SP3, but they have a seperate KB entry for that:

Re: Essential Firewire Information for PC Users!

Thanks guys,

Does anyone know if Vista has this problem? That would definitely explain almost everyone's dropout issues if it did.

Re: Essential Firewire Information for PC Users!

Vista, to my knowledge, does not suffer from this problem. The problem rarely causes drop-outs, but more often loss of firewire connection and general performance issues.

Re: Essential Firewire Information for PC Users!

Bandwidth limitations might explain why I can't link a DKx32 and a SK48 on a firewire BUS... I will try chaining them off my Toshiba tomorrow. I've applied the patch.

Perhaps you can tell me how that combination of hardware units is meant to work in a system? I imagine TCE has tried to link them.

If TCE have managed to get a DKx32 and a SK48 running with all the DKx32 channels running over firewire I'd be interested to know which hardware was used.

Cheers

Re: Essential Firewire Information for PC Users!

I have tried that personally on:
A Carillion (via chipset)
A MacBook Pro (ti chipset)
An Acer Aspire (ti chipset)

I'm sure the test department has been through a number of setups as well.
I can't really figure out...did you have a TI chipset on your current system?

Re: Essential Firewire Information for PC Users!

The Apiotek FW800 Expresscard in my Asus Vista based laptop has a TI chipset and I cannot get the two units to work together without major problems. The return channels to Integrator are offset by one pair and when I send to the last firwire pair (15/16) the computer suffers a BSOD.

I am going to try it on my Toshiba4 tonight which has an Adaptec PCMCIA FW400 card in that with a TI chipset. I found that worked way better than the Asus with the Apiotek when I tried it before applying the firewire patch you put me onto the other day; but it only allowed for 3 pairs of DKx32 before missed audio and pops etc occurred. That may improve somewhat with teh appl;ied patch.

I don't want to use the Toshiba in the studio though as it's too slow, and the Asus was a stop-gap anyway until I can make a Quad core machine.

Thanks for getting back to me.

can anyone share with me the 955408 hotfix Danish version.
Can't seem to get it from the Microsoft guys or any other place on the net.

Thanx
